The Three Hidden Gems of Mandaue City

While the very urban center of Cebu is Cebu City proper, other neighboring cities do have a few gems that are at least worth passing by. Some of these can be nice, budget-friendly hotels and others have a surprising bit of history behind them.

In this post, we’ll be covering some of these interesting sites found in Mandaue City. Much like Talisay and Minglanilla, most people consider Mandaue as a place to just drive through. However, here are three interesting places you can check out if you are ever in the area.

1. Bai Hotel

Bai Hotel in Mandaue is one of the newest additions to Metro Cebu’s high-rise hospitality complexes. And while it may not be as grand as, say, the Waterfront or Marco Polo, its opening night was still a very glamorous occasion.

Travellers will find plenty of familiar luxury amenities at the Bai, including a sushi bar, steakhouse and coffee lounge. The 21st floor also houses a pool with a gorgeous view overlooking the city. Its conference halls are also quite spacious, with several event and catering packages that go with them.

2. Parkmall

While it is neither an SM or an Ayala, Parkmall has its own charm among Mandaue residents for a number of reasons. It houses branches of many popular fast food restaurants (as well as a good lechon eatery and an eat-all-you-can Korean BBQ). The mall is also the only known place to have a laser tag attraction. So if you want to put that activity on your Cebu itinerary, then this should be your go-to stop!

And if you just love walking around with your pets, then you should know that Parkmall has made a big name for itself as the most pet-friendly mall in Metro Cebu. It is very common to see a lot of people walking their dogs in its pavilion. Meanwhile, pet-related events are even hosted there at many different times of the year!

3. San Miguel Brewery

If you have taken a liking to San Miguel beer, then it might interest you to know that one major brewery is also a Mandaue landmark. It is really hard to miss (especially when you are going down Briones Street).

The plant opened in the 1960s, and much of its look has not changed. It still has the big, light-up San Miguel bottle perched at the top. Meanwhile, the compound inside houses a number of facilities for the workers (including its own power plant as well as a dedicated clinic).

The brewery is also considered to be very symbolic of Mandaue’s role as a manufacturing and industrial sector of Metro Cebu. During its early years, the factory had drawn hundreds, if not thousands of aspiring workmen who saw it as a big city opportunity outside of Manila. And while many things have changed since then, its legacy lives on in the memories of many residents.

So, those are just some of the few places of note that might catch your eye while you are going around in Mandaue. Incidentally, many of them are well within driving distance of each other. So whether you are going around in your own rental car, or someone is taking you, don’t hesitate to ask about them!
